Ste. Anne de Detroit Church to Host First Tridentine Mass in its Main Church

Oakland County Latin Mass Association president Cecilia Lakin has secured permission from Detroit’s oldest parish for a special Tridentine Mass: For the first time since 1969, Ste. Anne de Detroit will host the Traditional Latin Mass in its main church, on Tuesday, October 11 at 7:00 PM for the Feast of the Maternity of the Blessed Virgin Mary. Astute readers may recall that Juventútem Michigan held a Holy Mass in the Extraordinary Form in that parish’s Gabriel Richard Chapel in 2014. [Exterior photo by Andrew Jameson]

Ste. Anne is best known as the home of Catholic Renaissance Man, the late Fr. Gabriel Richard, who co-founded the University of Michigan and was responsible for the creation of Michigan Avenue, among many other accomplishments. Ste. Anne is also the spiritual twin of Windsor’s Assumption Church, the longtime former home of the St. Benedict Tridentine Community. The two churches mirror each other at opposite ends of the Ambassador Bridge. Ste. Anne for a long time was, and Assumption Parish still is, pastored by the Basilian Fathers. Both are their respective communities’ oldest parishes. Both reflect their French Canadian heritage, with traditional Gothic architecture. Now finally Ste. Anne will join its sister in once again offering the classic Catholic liturgy.

Ste. Anne is historically intact, with a High Altar, a High Pulpit, and a wooden Communion Rail. For many years, Ste. Anne was the site of an annual Latin Mass in the Ordinary Form, held as part of the annual Novena of Masses prior to the Feast of Ste. Anne.

More details will be announced as the date of the Mass approaches.
