The Secretary General of the Synod of Bishops has said the Church should update its doctrine on marriage in an interview ahead of October’s Extraordinary Synod on the Family.Let's not prejudge the issue. It may all turn out to be merely "pastoral." (Um ... what did that mean again?)
"The Church is not timeless, she lives amidst the vicissitudes of history and the Gospel must be known and experienced by people today," said Cardinal Lorenzo Baldisseri in an interview with the Christian weekly magazine Tertio.

He makes a good point because in the past married men and women never divorced and committed adultery, not even the Samaritan woman, Photina, with whom Jesus spoke at the well
Define "update".
Define "forward-looking".
(I am just reading a biography of Alexandr Solzhenitsyn, so claims that the world will always be in a state of progress seem especially empty to me).
Chris,
Exactly. These are obviously ironically "weighted" terms. To confirm the first, you'd have to contact the author of the ZENIT article, but the placement in quote marks makes the case abundantly clear.
To confirm the second, you have my word that my use of quote marks around "forward-looking" was indeed deliberately intended with said irony.
Hence, you may be assured of my whole-hearted agreement with you and with our beloved Alexandr Solzhenitsyn that claims of perpetual "progress" are utterly empty.
I forget now where we lived when we saw a wonderful sign: "closed for remodeling". The building had been razed.
