"Cardinal Dolan has come under criticism for inviting Obama to the dinner. He did him no favors. Romney hit Obama hard in regard to Obama’s attacks against the Church, just as I suspect Dolan was certain would happen. Just 19 days from the election, I wager that Obama would have avoided the dinner tonight if he could have without sustaining political damage."For another point of view, see Michael Voris' Jeremiad, "Let the Persecution Begin" (ChurchMilitant.TV, October 19, 2012).

Thanks, Cardinal Dolan. We can all see that you did indeed use this event to convert the man. Good on ya.
The pink-facedd pealing laughter of a Prince of the Church seated next to the man who is dutifully working to destroy his Church might, at first blush, seem unsettling until we remember the example of Jesus who used to hang-out and joke around with those who were plotting to destroy Him.
Not Spartacus,
Jesus notoriously ate and drank with sinners. That, at least, was the allegation cited by the Four Evangelists.
I do not know of allegations by the Evangelists that Jesus ate and drank with those who were plotting to destroy him. He wasn't exactly on joking terms with the Pharisees, was he?
Whatever Dolan's motives were, I do find the image of the "pink-faced pealing laughter of a Prince of the Church seated next to the man who is dutifully working to destroy his Church" not merely unsettling, but offensive.
The picture says it all. It will remain after the various lame efforts to spin Ab Dolan's efforts at political strategy have been forgotten.
In the words of the Falstaffian archbishop, it's a real "biggie."
Jesus ate and drank with beggars and tax collectors and other assorted riffraff who were, like Him, scorned and hated by the rabbinical classes. That is a wee bit different case than a well-looked-after archbishop trading guffaws with Emperor Black Jesus in a roomful of domesticated Catholic patricians.
Donald McClarey's take on the dinner was detached from reality. Was he even looking at the real dinner?
