Martin Mosebach: There’s already a schism, not between supporters of the new and old rites, but between those Catholics who adhere to the old sacramental theology of the Church as was solemnly confirmed by Vatican II, and those who assert that Vatican II founded a new Church with a new theology and new sacraments. This latter doctrine has been diffused wholesale and against the better knowledge of its promoters, in the seminaries, universities and Catholic academies. This is what has fostered the danger of a schism.

Good excerpt. I would take it yet one more step back and say the schism is between those who believe the Church is the trustworthy and infallible teacher of Christian doctrine, and those who believe there is no such teacher on earth. Not that every layman thinks of it in those terms, but I think that's what it comes down to.
I read Mosebach's book when it first came out, and I am again moved by the profundity of his insights. There is something about the raw directness of his discourse that cuts through mounds and football fields full of obscurantism and gets straight at the heart of the issue. Thanks for this link!
If you have any doubt of Mosebach's claim, consider the evisceration of the sacrament of Extreme Unction, and its replacement by the current communal doofustry known as the "Sacrament of the Sick". You would do as well slipping into particular judgment whispering, "now I lay me down to sleep . . . ."
