As always, I continue to be moved not only by the great resiliency of the Japanese people, but by their great courtesy in always remembering to thank those who have showed them kindness. Very moving. Please join me in remembering them in your prayers.
According to wiki's list of intentional homicide by country, Japan is the third safest country on earth in terms of murder. They have the death penalty but they also have ethnic homogeneity, no historically enslaved internal population that remains poor (think USA and most of northern Latin America for the opposite). And last but not least, you never know who knows karate or aikido over there....if you are criminally inclined. Singapore (death penalty...yes) is the 7th safest nation murder-wise on earth. Both are safer than virtually all Catholic countries most of which have no death penalty....with Monaco being safer than both Japan and Singapore; and Austria and Monaco being safer than Singapore only. Moral of this story? Let's have transparency as to whether the last two Popes studied any stats or studies prior to coming up with their death penalty position. Let's have Benedict submit himself to public debate on the matter. The NY Times had an article on those University profs who came to see the dp as saving lives all told.

This is very touching indeed. One covets for these naturally gracious people the supernatural grace of conversion to the Catholic faith.
