Beyond the "comfort zone" (Fr. Rutler)

A gem retrieved by Guy Noir from 21 years ago:
When the criterion for reality is comfort, sensually or intellectually, the world becomes a more comfortable place. It also becomes an orphanage. The Cross disappears, but vanishing with it is the Woman who stood by it. The consequence for culture would be unspeakable except for they way they are shouted by irrepressible statistics. Comfortable art turns pornographic, comfortable science designs only gadgets, comfortable misc lyricists bromide, comfortable liturgies flaunt sentimentality, and comfortable families disappear.

Fr. Geo. W. Rutler, The Seven Wonders of the World, 1993, p. 68.
