I'm an artist but this painting is too grotesque for me. On the suffering of Christ, Aquinas strikes me as best and I'm a critical fan of his.
Aquinas held that the suffering of Christ exceeded the suffering of any human in history and on the face of it, those who were flayed or had painful illness for years had more suffering than Christ at first thought. But Aquinas seems correct as his initial quote from Lamentations suggests:

I can personally attest to the fact that Mr. Bannon is an artist, and a good one. Thank you, sir, for your art and for your studied and illuminating thoughts on the manner. Any reference to the work of the Angelic Doctor is well-worth following up with careful analysis. Many thanks.

Blessings to all the Blossers and to the Japanese who in NHK have the most fascinating tv network that sometimes illustrates the anonymous Christian...and it's not cable even....my absolute favorite network.
