In my town this year the Episcopalians had “ashes to go.” The faux clergypals stood on downtown corners like pretzel vendors (vendorettes?) or squeegee persons and X’ed the foreheads of the time-constrained faithful as they sat waiting in their tiny little put-putting smart cars (or whatever Episcopalians drive these days).
It can hardly have escaped the button down minds of up-to-date Catholics that this “drive thru” principle could bear wondrous fruit when applied to the dispensing of any sacrament (perhaps not Extreme Unction, but the Sacrament of the Sick is a natural).
Grace by the barrelful! And all because of dialogue and ecumenism!
Ralph. My son Chris was at a local Parish and at the beginning of the event (He is rankled by the foolishness at that Parish but was constrained to go there due to complicating factors) the Presider said We will not distribute ashes until the end of the service because so many people arrive late and the whole point of Ash Wednesday is to get the ashes.
