Extraordinary Community News 3rd Sunday after Easter EF = 4th Sunday of Easter OF

"I will go in unto the Altar of God
To God, Who giveth joy to my youth"

Tridentine Community News (May 11, 2014):
The Extraordinary Form Calendar

One of the first things newcomers to the Traditional Latin Mass notice is the different liturgical calendar. The schedule of Feast Days, the readings, and the Mass Propers differ between the Ordinary and Extraordinary Forms. This is one of the reasons why we supply Latin/English Propers Handouts, and why some people bring hand missals for the Latin Mass.

A perfect example is the season in which we now find ourselves: Today is the Third Sunday after Easter in the Extraordinary Form, while it is the Fourth Sunday of Easter in the Ordinary Form. The EF has two Sunday readings, (usually) an Epistle and always a Gospel, while the OF (usually) has an Old Testament First Reading, a New Testament Second Reading, and a Gospel.

Wall Calendars are available for the Extraordinary Form to keep you informed as to the EF Feasts. We make calendars available in December of each year for the following year.

Pontifical Mass Draws Crowd at Providence, Rhode Island Cathedral

Diocese of Rochester, New York Bishop Salvatore Matano recently celebrated a Pontifical Solemn Mass in the Extraordinary Form for a packed house of young and old alike at Providence, Rhode Island’s Cathedral of Ss. Peter & Paul. Providence Bishop Thomas Tobin requested the Mass to commemorate the cathedral’s 125th anniversary. Bishop Tobin’s administrative secretary and Director of the Office of Worship Fr. Jeremy Rodrigues organized the Mass and served as Master of Ceremonies. A choir and orchestra performed Schubert’s Mass in G. Two former bishops of Providence were in attendance. A marvelous example of diocesan initiative, rewarded with good attendance. [Photo from The New Liturgical Movement]

First Masses of Soon-to-be Fr. Joe Tuskiewicz

Many of our readers know Deacon Joe Tuskiewicz. A former executive with one of the world’s largest advertising firms, Joe had been actively involved as an altar server for the Tridentine Masses at St. Josaphat, St. Joseph, Assumption-Windsor, and St. Albertus Churches for many years prior to entering Boston’s John XXIII Seminary.

Time flies: Deacon Joe will be ordained to the holy priesthood on Saturday, June 7. He will celebrate his first Holy Mass in the Extraordinary Form on Sunday, June 8 at 9:30 AM at Detroit’s St. Joseph Church. At Joe’s request, Wassim Sarweh will lead the music, and a joint altar server team from St. Josaphat/St. Joseph, St. Benedict/Assumption-Windsor, and the Academy of the Sacred Heart will assist. A reception will follow the Mass in the parish hall.

A Plenary Indulgence may be gained under the usual conditions by attending the first Holy Mass of a newly ordained priest. After Mass, soon-to-be Fr. Joe will bestow his first priestly blessings.

Fr. Joe will celebrate his first Solemn High Tridentine Mass at St. Benedict/Assumption-Windsor on Sunday, June 22 at 2:00 PM. As this date is the External Solemnity of Corpus Christi, a Eucharistic Procession will follow the Mass, outdoors if weather permits.

As Fr. Joe’s schedule allows, he hopes to celebrate additional Tridentine Masses at other churches in the region. He has been assigned as Assistant Pastor at St. Joan of Arc Parish in St. Clair Shores, Michigan, effective July 1.

New Assignment for Fr. John Johnson

Congratulations are in order to Fr. John Johnson, who has received two new assignments: First, he has been named pastor of St. Anne, St. Thomas, and Holy Angels Parishes in St. Thomas, Ontario. Second, he has been placed in charge of the London, Ontario Extraordinary Form group, which has its Masses on Sundays at 2:00 PM in the chapel of Regina Mundi College in London. Fr. John is a great friend to the Latin Mass communities in our region, and his leadership is sure to be a blessing to our colleagues in London.
