Don't you just love when scientists speak as "experts" about subjects totally outside their competence? Laura Roberts, "Stephen Hawking: God was not needed to create the Universe" (Telegraph.co.uk, September 2, 2010), writes:
In his latest book, The Grand Design,an extract of which is published in Eureka magazine in The Times, Hawking said: “Because there is a law such as gravity, the Universe can and will create itself from nothing. Spontaneous creation is the reason there is something rather than nothing, why the Universe exists, why we exist.”What would Mr. Hawking think if the tables were turned? If he were to watch a Bible-thumping televangelist on a TV show insist that the world was created only a little over 6,000 years ago (4004 B.C.), based on Ussher's Bible chronology, do you think he would come to his senses and convert to Biblical Fundamentalism?
Sheesh. Why does this stuff continue to be reported seriously under the rubrics of "scientific news"? This is actually not at all uncommon. It's actually astounding how much "scientists" have to say publicly about "theology," "metaphysics," and "ethics"! Means to Message: A Treatise on Truth(1999) by the late great physicist and theologian, Fr. Stanley L. Jaki (pictured left) offers abundant and telling examples, from Heisenberg to Watson & Crick.
There's clearly a lot more wisdom and perception in the Catholic blogosphere than in the press.
ReplyDelete"a Bible-thumping televangelist on a TV show insist that the world was created only a little over 4,000 years ago, based on Ussher's Bible chronology,"
ReplyDeleteA little over 6,000 years ago, that is. Archbishop Ussher placed the creation of the universe in 4004 B.C., not 2004 B.C.
Thanks for the correction, Jordanes. I'll make it in the post as well.
ReplyDeleteGravity pulls matter together. No matter, no gravity. Matter is prior. Whence the matter? The system cannot be explained from within. Nihil ex nihil fit nisi Dominus facit.
ReplyDeleteWas the title of the book suppose to be ironic? Or is it spontaneously created designerless-design.
ReplyDeleteLets not get duped in thinking that this its a debate between religion and science . This is a a debate within science !
ReplyDeletethis is explained in this post here.

Jeff
Jeff Miller is right. Design without a Designer? Law of gravity without a Lawgiver?
ReplyDeletePhooey!
Let's not get duped into thinking this is a debate within science. You don't say there is no need for God if you mean that gravity can explain evolution. The claim is that the universe is programmed. It begs the question, "Why or by whom?"

Stephen Hawking has been talking,
Hawking Faith in what's unseen;
Rub the lamp and there you have it!
We can see just what he means!
Yep, no Deity is needed,
Nope, now God need not apply.
Church of Po-Mo Speculation:
“Just So” stories in the sky.
Humanism's same ol' same ol',
Trace it back to Babel's Tow'r....
Scientism's Holy Temple,
Deconstruction's finest hour.
Naturalism in full flower,
Still avoiding Deity...
Mankind hiding in the Garden,
Singing hymns to Gravity!

“POOF!”...... String Theory's “mutiverses”
All strung out in Godless Noughts.
Mental prestidigitation,
Such Enchantment! Come and see!

ReplyDeleteBRAVO! Brilliantly done! Thanks for the inspiration.
TORTOISE (Hinduism) and DRAGON (Taoism) are symbols for ENERGY or WAVE, both are analog with MAGEN DAVID (Judaism). "Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs" is the metaphor, also Thawaf seven times circling around the Ka'ba and Sa’i oscillating along “the sinus” Marwah-Shafa during rituals of the Hajj (Abraham).
ReplyDelete"A BRIEF HISTORY OF TIME - From the Big Bang to Black Hole" by Stephen W. Hawking is the best scientific interpretation of AL QUR'AN by a non believer. It is also a “genuine bridge stone” for comprehensive study of Theology. Surprise, this paradox is a miracle and blessing in disguise as well. So, it should be very wise and challenging for Moslem scholars to verify my discovery.
