News almost a week old, but for the record, the Vatican's Prefect for Divine Worship, Cardinal Antonio Canizares Llovera recently recommended that ALL Catholics receive Communion on the tongue, while kneeling.
As reported by Catholic News Agency (July 28, 2011), the Cardinal said that "It is to simply know that we are before God himself and that He came to us and that we are undeserving."
Now, is that not refreshingly NOT about "we-ourselves-and-us," for a change? What a novel concept: we gather-us-in together at Mass, not to celebrate US, or our "COMMUNITY," but in awe, to let-all-our-mortal-flesh-keep-silence, in adoration, before the majesty of our LORD!
“If we trivialize Communion, we trivialize everything, and we cannot lose a moment as important as that of receiving Communion, of recognizing the real presence of Christ there, of the God who is the love above all loves ..." he declared.
Receiving Communion on the tongue while kneeling, the cardinal continued, “is the sign of adoration that needs to be recovered. I think the entire Church needs to receive Communion while kneeling.” (emphasis added)
Won't the "We Are Church" and "Call to Action" crowds love this!!
Sadly, that will not happen. Virtually every single Parish prepares their First Communicants to receive in their hands; standing.
ReplyDeleteAnd once they are taught that way...
In his opening speech to the Second Vatican Council, Pope John XXIIi formally and publicly abandoned ecclesiastical discipline (without which all is chaos, as Dom Gueranger noted) and so the revolution has concretised.
It will take a Pope Peter Romanus to set right all of the wrongs of the past one-half century.
In the meantime, thanks be to God for the FFSP and The SSPX and the other Traditional Orders.
I ought note that I had to fight my local Priest when it came to my children. He had his Church, St Bartholomew's in Cape Elizabeth, Maine, administer the Sacraments out of order - Communion before Confession - and he had the children receive in the hand.
So, after taking my concerns to him and showing him what the competent authorities had decided, he made it clear I could do what I wanted but that he was happy with the order of Sacraments, Communion in the hand, etc
So, I took my children to Confession before First Communion and I had then receive Communion on the tongue and it was ever so nice to be in a heterodox Parish with a Priest who opposed the competent authority and have my children be the only ones in that Church to receive Communion on the tongue but, never forget that the real problem in the church is the SSPX because they insist on the right order of Sacraments and the Immemorial Mass, and in doing what we Christian Catholics have done, consistently, without interruption for twice 500 years, and more.
Philip,
ReplyDeleteIn the past several years I have tried to get fellow Catholic men to abstain from serving as Extraordinary Ministers of Holy Communion -- precisely because this refusal will allow greater emphasis to be placed on the Sacred Species and the vocation of the priest. I had an odd objection during my most recent forray: You have a theology of authority!
God bless,
Chris
Bravo, I-am-not-Spartacus!
ReplyDeleteBravo, Chris!
We need more like both of you!
My wife and I always make sure our kids understand that the teachers are completely wrong when they try to tell them everyone should receive Communion in the hand, and we explain why Communion on the tongue is to be preferred.
ReplyDeleteLook, you can't even get the coummunity of NO saints to fold their hands in prayer during recitation of the Our Father. Reception on the tongue is generally considered the euuuuu option. The communion rails were ripped out and trashed decades ago.
ReplyDeleteSo now, after 40+ years of indifference and sloth, the Vatican sends Llovado to the microphone, and what's going to happen??
Ralph:
ReplyDeleteIf you don't like the Cardinal, at least come up with some cute moniker! Don't you remember Edward Sillybeaks?
On the other hand, isn't SOME attempt to correct the problem better than none at all?
Have you not noticed that we're not being fed a steady stream of "look at the wonderful blossoming of the Church since the new Pentecost" anymore?
Chris
Nothing is going to happen, because they have the instruments to do so (in the case of CaƱizares, the abolition of all indults allowing for this abomination), but only talk, and talk, and talk endlessly. I was a Protestant deeply in love with the Church in the late 1990s/early 2000s, and remember the "liturgical battles" and the "brave" things (similar to what is reported here) said by Arinze (remember him?), and how everything would change with Redemptionis Sacramentum (remember that?).
ReplyDeleteThen I went to a Traditional Mass, entered the Church, and never looked back - to Protestantism or to the Novus Ordo.
[Hey, I should turn this comment into a post...]
As usual, Roister is maddeningly correct. I guess I'm glad for the paper-trail if, Lord willing, the Council of Trent II ever happens.
ReplyDeleteNew Catholic,
ReplyDeleteYou really SHOULD take this (what you said) and run with a new post.
