Psalm 108 is even better. The Scottish Cove...Dan,

Psalm 108 is even better. The Scottish Covenanter congregations traditionally chanted the Psalms a capella. This Psalm is in their Sunday Psalm book, though it has been taken out of most contemporary Catholic Liturgy of the Hours prayer books. C.S. Lewis saw them as egregious transgressions of the moral law of charity and thought they didn't belong among divinely inspired Scripture. Perhaps it's a perverse streak in me, though my verdict on my own motives is still out, but I do think they very much belong. Even the Apostle John has been faulted for his attitude toward the Jews who crucified our Lord. But who's to say that loving your enemies isn't compatible with praying for their early demise? It's part of experience, minimally. Besides -- back to my attitude -- it's a bit like loving the smell of napalm in the morning, along with the sizzle of Papal Bulls for breakfast.Pertinacious Papisthttps://www.blogger.com/profile/03213911570586726075noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6312447.post-14889725902695747212011-08-25T14:47:21.060-04:002011-08-25T14:47:21.060-04:00Excellent related piece that provides a tutorial m...Excellent related piece that provides a tutorial much needed on the parish level, where counter-emphases have long prevailed:

LAST SUPPER OR MARRIAGE SUPPER?

http://gkupsidedown.blogspot.com/2011/08/last-supper-or-marriage-supper.htmlJFMhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/05496819581817926605noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6312447.post-51819159300124049602011-08-25T12:50:20.877-04:002011-08-25T12:50:20.877-04:00A rather warlike and triumphal context lurks behin...A rather warlike and triumphal context lurks behind the Latin quote.

Psalm 109

1 Dixit Dominus Domino meo:
Sede a dextris meis,
donec ponam inimicos tuos scabellum pedum tuorum.

2 Virgam virtutis tuæ emittet Dominus ex Sion:
dominare in medio inimicorum tuorum.

3 Tecum principium in die virtutis tuæ
in splendoribus sanctorum:
ex utero, ante luciferum, genui te.

4 Juravit Dominus, et non pœnitebit eum:
Tu es sacerdos in æternum
secundum ordinem Melchisedech.

5 Dominus a dextris tuis;
confregit in die iræ suæ reges.

6 Judicabit in nationibus, implebit ruinas;
conquassabit capita in terra multorum.

7 De torrente in via bibet;
PROPTEREA EXALTABIT CAPUT.Dannoreply@blogger.com
